Boa tarde,

Tenho um Notebook Toshiba com Windows XP.
Meu HD tem tres partições C/ D/ e E/ e 10GB que deixei livre para o Ubuntu.
Baixei a imagem ISO do Ubuntu e criei o CD.
Testei o CD e o LiveCD estava funcionando perfeitamente.
A partir do Live CD optei pela instalação do Ubuntu no HD.
Parece que instalou tudo bem, mas quando reinicializo o Notebook ele informa:
"GRUB Hard Disk Error" e para aí e não entra nem no Windows.
Dei boot pelo CD do Ubuntu ele funciona normalmente e vejo as minhas partições e a nova com o Ubuntu.
Como faço para corrigir o Grub?

Com o LiveCD abra um terminal (Aplicações > Acessórios > Terminal), e execute os comandos abaixo:

E cole o resultado aqui para tentarmos ajudar. Após isto ainda precisaremos do seu arquivo menu.lst que esta gravado na partição Ubuntu, mas para ajuda-lo a abrir antes precisamos destas informações.

Três perguntas:

1 - Vc tem uma leitora de cartões plugada no seu notebook ?
2 - Essa leitora estava conectada quando vc instalou o Ubuntu ?
3 - Vc se importaria de reinstalar o Ubuntu ?

Tem alguma coisa errada em seu sistema, o comando blkid deveria retornar todas as sua partições e isso não está acontecendo.

Outra coisa, quando vc instalou o Ubuntu vc selecionou gravar o Grub onde, na MBR ou na partição raiz ?

Antes de seguir as dicas do FaBMak, que é o que deve mesmo dar certo, podemos fazer ao menos um teste, por desencargo de consciência?

É que odeio ter a necessidade de reinstalar o Linux por causa de um problema.

Bem, se aceitar vamos lá. Com o LiveCD acesse o terminal (Acessórios > Aplicações > Terminal) e execute os comandos:

Monte a partição raiz em um diretório e reinstale o GRUB, por desencargo de confiança:

Olá,

Vocês estão sendo muito bacanas, mas como a resposta estava demorando um pouco e eu preciso muito desta máquina, tomei a iniciativa de reinstalar o Ubuntu em novas condições:
a) Realmente quando instalei da primeira vez deixei um Cartão SD de 4GB na leitora de cartões e que que agora o removi.
b) Fiz um BackUp dos meus dados contidos nas partições D e E e as desabilitei.
c) Portanto nesta nova instalação, minha máquina estava apenas com o Windows XP ocupando 20 GB do meu HD na primeira partição.
d) Desinstalei o grub com o comando fdisk /mbr, de um CD "bootavel" do Windows 98 SE.
e) Reiniciei o Notebook com o CD do Ubuntu e reinstalei todo o Ubuntu criando as partições manualmente de forma que criei a SWAP e a / .
f) Instalei e tudo correu normalmente.
g) Depois da instalação criei, a partir do Windows XP minha partição de dados. Ele ficou assim:
Windows XP - Swap - Ubuntu - Dados
h) Reiniceiei a máquina e lá estava: GRUB Hard Disk Error

Bem aí vão agora os resultados dos comandos:

Como houve estas mudanças não sei agora se devo seguir as orientações enviadas anteriormente pelo FaBMak, pelo Cristiano ou o que fazer!!!

Só consigo emtra em minha máquina dando boot com o CD do Windows 98 e mandando iniciar do HD e aó aparecem as opções do Ubuntu e do Windows XP.

Desculpem-me pela ousadia, mesmo sabendo que é feriado, se puderem me dar uma dica agradeço bastante.

Complementando:

Fiz as alteraçoes no menu.lst tirando o UUID e substituindo por /dev/sda3 e reinstalei o grub conforme os comandos enviados, reinicializei a máquina e lá estava:
GRUB Hard Disk Error

Volto e ter que acessar a máquina pelo CD do Windows 98 SE.

Na isntalação do Ubuntu e na criação da partições deixei marcada a opção "inicio".

Outra: já tive instalado o FEDORA neste Notebook com o Grub e não teve nenhum problema. Só que não o usava e desinstalei. Como agora estou precisando do Linux optei pelo Ubuntu.

Vou ler com algum cuidado o tópico para ver o que é possível, mas de qualquer forma uma boa tentativa é seguir o tópico:

Usando o boot-loader do Windows XP em vez de lilo ou grub - 10/11/2007

Entenda que ainda estou lendo seu tópico para ver se ajudo a descobrir qual é o problema com o GRUB.

Uma pergunta. Lendo sua mensagem ficou com a seguinte dúvida. Primeiro vou postar a parte da sua mensagem que trouxe a dúvida:

Apenas após a criação da partição dados o problema apareceu?

Como criou esta partição de dados? Na instalação do Ubuntu já deixou o espaço dela reservado, ou entrou no windows e tirou parte da partição do Ubuntu?

Dependendo a situação será fácil de resolver, dependendo não.

Uma coisa que pode parecer banal, mas pode confundir o grub é a marcação de boot no sda5, ao invés do sda1. Já li sobre pessoas que resolveram seus problemas com o grub deixando o boot na primeira partição, mesmo que seja windows. O importante é ser na primeira partição.

Respondendo a sua pergunta:

Resposta: Não. Estava tendo acesso a tabela de inicialização pelo CD do Windows 98 SE "bootável" (Iniciar do Disco Rígido) e aí memostrava todas as possibilidades de acesso. Entrei no XP e pelo administrador de discos do XP deletei as partições do Ubuntu e as minhas de dados antigas exceto a do XP. Com fdisk /mbr deletei o grub.

2) Apenas após a criação da partição dados o problema apareceu?
Resposta: Não. Logo que instalei o Ubuntu e que tirei seu CD para reiniciar, já deu o erro. Criei as partições de dados depois de instalar o Ubuntu, a partir do administrador de discos do XP.

3) Como criou esta partição de dados? Na instalação do Ubuntu já deixou o espaço dela reservado, ou entrou no windows e tirou parte da partição do Ubuntu?
Resposta: Conforme dito acima, a partir do Administrador de Discos do XP. Na instalação do Ubuntu deixei o espaço dela reservado.

Inicialamente obrigado, mas creio não ser este o problema pois o boot já está apontando para o primeira partição. Veja:

Realmente intrigante esse problema. Mas parece que agora a coisa melhorou, pelo menos os resultados dos comandos fazem sentido, no entanto volto a perguntar:

FaBMak salvo me engano você pode perder os dados da partição caso selecione ela, não?

Para tirar a dúvida o serfran poderia dar boot no pc com o LiveCD, abrir o terminal (Aplicações > Acessórios > Terminal)
montar a partição e listar ela para nós.

Montando partição:

Lendo as informações da partição:
