Instalei o Ubuntu 8.04 do zero, quando eu logo pela primeira vez
a resolução ta normal só a tela que está deslocada um pouco pra direita,
Mas no 7.10 também fazia assim até eu instalar o Driver Restrito da placa de Video,
e quando reiniciava estava normal e com os efeitos.
mas no 8.04 após instalar o Driver Restrito e reiniciar o sistema, a resolução máxima que me é oferecida é 800x600 sendo que minha placa de vídeo é uma Nvidia Gforce FX 5200 e a resolução adequada seria 1024x768.
