Problemas com aceleração placa ATI X1950pro Ubuntu 7.10 (quase resolvido)

  Olá apos uma reinstalação do Ubuntu 7.10 baixei o driver no site da ATI e instalei conforme as instruções do site, mas não consigo ativar nenuhum tipo de efeito, quando vou no gerenciador de drivers restritos a situação do driver fica como em uso mas com o "habilitado" desmarcado, quando tento marcar aparece a seguinte mensagem "Não foi possível aplicar mudanças! Conserte os pacotes quebrados primeiro."
   É possível ativar os efeitos pois antes já havia feito isso, mas como sai procurando solução e testando na primeira vez acabei não conseguindo mais fechar sessão (apenas desligava o computador e reiniciava) estou perguntando aqui para resolver isso sem fazer besteira.

  Outra coisa o linux reconhece minha placa com o modelo correto mas reconhece apenas 128 dos 512mb de memória dela, oque posso fazer para resolver isso?

Valeu pela atenção, resolvi o problema em parte, segui o guia http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Gutsy_Installation_Guide, editei o xorg.conf para "composite 1"
 quando eu configuro os efeitos para personalizados, fecho a janela e abro novamente fica como extra. Outra quando tento configurar a resolução para 1680x1050 (nativa do monitor) a tela fica assim

Fora estar reconhecendo apenas 128 dos meus 512 mb de memória de vídeo.

Resolvido em parte, quanto a resoluçaõ do monitor a soluçã foi acrescentar os dados referentes a 1680x1050 na mão no xorg.conf segue ele abaixo com os dados que foram acrescentados estao em negrito ente os dados do modeline foram pegos com o comando "sudo gtf 1680 1050 60" e adaptados para ficarem na mesma forma dos outros, descobri esse comando neste site http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-general-1/xorg-configuration-for-screen-resolution-611129/
