GeForce4 420 Go+Ubuntu 6.10

Tenho um Toshiba 2450-101 no qual instalei o Edgy, entretanto a minha geforce4 420 go só aceita o driver legacy e para ter aceleração gráfica tenho que acrescentar no xorg.conf na secção "Device": "Option  "RenderAccell" "true" e "Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true", até aqui tudo bem mas, se eu abrir novamente o xorg.conf como root com o gedit , o sistema crasha.
Supostamente a minha  GeForce4 420 Go é suportada pelo driver nvidia-glx (mais recente) , mas quando eu instalo este e reinicio o sistema o X já não inicia ficando tudo preto e daí já não sai.
Há alguem q tem o mesmo problema e q tenha resolvido?

Algo semelhante aconteceu comigo, tenho uma Geforce FX 5200 e também instalei a versão mais nova do driver da nVidia via synaptic. No entanto quando ia iniciar gerenciador de janelas dava uma mensagem de erro e não entrava. O que fiz para resolver foi colocar o live cd do Ubuntu e copiar o xorg.conf original mudando apenas a linha do driver de nv para nvidia, agora esta funcionando sem problemas.

Antes de mais obrigado pela resposta, fiz uma instalação nova e um backup do xorg.conf a seguir instalei o driver nvidia-glx e depois substitui o xorg pelo backup, mas infelizmente não resultou ou seja fica sempre com o monitor preto.
Anteriormente tinha o Dapper e este tambem só aceitava o driver legacy, mas não dava problemas, começo a ficar convencido q a Geforce4 não suporta os novos drivers embora a nvidia diga o contrário.
É curioso que no meu Desktop (geforce 5950Ultra)+Edgy trabalha bem com os drivers novos mas, com a versão anterior Dapper tambem só funcionava com os drivers antigos.
Será q é algum bug no xserver , nvidia ou então do suporte ao xgl (salvo erro) q veio atrapalhar isto?.

Bom, no 6.10 o comando para ativar o driver mudou, não sei se você sabe disso.

E já tentou o driver nvidia-glx-legacy?

Eu consiguo instalar o driver legacy ,mas tenho que acrescentar e editar os tais parametros ao Xorg acima indicados para ter aceleração grafica (fica a funcionar ), e não executo qualquer comando adicional ou é mesmo necessário?, estranho é o sistema travar quando abro o xorg com o gedit em root .
PS:No meu Desktop tudo funciona bem e até reconfigurei o xorg (instalação do monitor) com o commando: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, e já agora para quem gosta de jogos 3D (como eu) e não consegue executa-los (apenas no Edgy) tem que instalar as bibliotecas "libSDLimage" e "libSDLmixer" e talvez tambem o "libSDLnet".

desabilitei o driver nvidia e habilitei o nv. sobe o X, mas nao consigo radar o fgfs, por exemplo-

meu xorg.conf (estah uma bagunca, instalei e desinstalei o compiz uma vez e o beryl uma vez, rodei o glx um tempo maluco, mas na nova atualizacao da amarack, ha uns tres dias, crashou feio.
