Repositórios Ubuntu 7.04/7.10/8.04

Olá, sou novo no ubuntu e estou gostando bastante. Comprei uma máquina nova e veio com o 7.04.
Minha pergunta é: tenho que atualizar para o 8.04 ou devo continuar com o 7.04? Quais as vantagens?
Caso positivo posso passar direto pro 8.04 ou tenho que primeiro passar pelo 7.10?
Como faço pra atualizar?

Como disse o maquiavelho o melhor é vc baixar o Live CD do 8.04 e fazer a instalação limpa.

Bom eu nunca fiz esse lance de atualizar a versão da distro, pois acho q corre o risco de não ficar 100%, tem gente q faz e fica normal o sistema e tem gente q não tem a mesma sorte e perde tudo, eu sempre procuro baixar a versão atual e instalar tudo do zero, fazendo backup dos meus dados...

Na realidade, a atualização torna o Sistema Operacional mais inchado, isto é, ocupando mais espaço no HD e, provavelmente, mais lento. Só um exemplo, entre outros:  Ao instalar o Ubuntu 7.04 este é instalado com uma versão de  kernel que ao longo do tempo vem sendo atualizado por outras e outras até o 8.04-1. Estas versões anteriores permanecem no SO, a não ser que vc as retire manualmente.

Na realidade, a atualização torna o Sistema Operacional mais inchado, isto é, ocupando mais espaço no HD e, provavelmente, mais lento. Só um exemplo, entre outros:  Ao instalar o Ubuntu 7.04 este é instalado com uma versão de  kernel que ao longo do tempo vem sendo atualizado por outras e outras até o 8.04-1. Estas versões anteriores permanecem no SO, a não ser que vc as retire manualmente.

Só no Ubuntu 8.10 está previstra uma ferramenta que após a atualização completa  do sistema, remova todo o "lixo" desnecessário do sistema. Com isso eles prometem tornar totalmente possível atualizar o sistema, sem precisar fazer instalação do Zero.  Eu ainda tenho minhas dúvidas. Só acredito vendo. Sempre preferi instalação do Zero!

Estou tentando fazer a alguns dias a atualização da minha lista de repositórios e está dando pau. Vou o problema que estou tendo abaixo:

Bom, primeiro peguei a lista e coloquei no sources.list. Claro que antes fiz o backup. Ae eu executo:

#apt-get update

Me retorna o seguinte:

Use a lista acima, pois a sua está esquisita (não reconheço os nomes dos repositórios).

Para fazer isso use o comando:

Então, faça o update e o upgrade.

Assim como disseram os amigos RC2006 e galactus, hj também prefiro a instalação limpa, pois percebi as tais inchações ditas pelo RC2006, principal/ na recente troca do 7.10 p/ o 8.04LTS, coisa que ñ percebi tanto qdo fiz do 7.04 p/ o 7.10

Mas acho muito interessante se aprimorar tal ferramenta da atualização de versão s/ ter que recorrer a imagens .ISO de liveCD

Por fim, qto as trocas de repositórios, a muito deixei de fazer isso, o que vem no liveCD eu deixo, só configuro p/ o servidor principal nos Canais de Software.
